So then I tried, using disk utility, restoring the BaseSystem.dmg from the package contents of the OSX Intaller to the destination of my USB. The problem is that Snow Leopard doesn't support the createinstallmedia command. I am finally trying to make the upgrade to El Capitan and want a bootable USB of it so I can make a clean install, wiping my internal HDD.
I have a 2011 macbook pro that is running Snow Leopard.
